Having a well-known celebrity endorse your product used to be the best way to ensure that consumers everywhere would rush to buy it. But the trend of celebrity endorsement is starting to fizzle like a flat soda.

Companies all over the world have always paid big bucks to celebrities in order to have a famous face associated with their products. Marketing execs for years have operated on the belief that the more popular the star is hawking a particular product, the more of that product consumers will buy. Well, that belief may be about to change.

Many companies are beginning to shy away from big names and get rid of celebrity endorsements altogether, not only because endorsement fees continue to skyrocket, but more importantly because high-powered marketing execs say their brands are being overshadowed by the high-profile celebrities who promote them. Sometimes the celebrities get more mileage from the endorsement than the product does.

One multimillion dollar example is the soft-drink giant Pepsi, who nixed both Beyonc Knowles and Britney Spears, saying that the celebrities were too big and the Pepsi brand didn’t get the promotion they were paying for and the stars were getting all the attention. Chrysler did the same thing with Celine Dion after signing a three-year, $14 million dollar deal with her to appear in commercials driving a Pacifica. The commercials were successful in producing great salesbut for the singer, not the car.

Sometimes companies are forced to drop celebrities from their ads when they come under fire, or else their own image could be tarnished by being associated with the celebrity. Robert DeNiro may be on the threshold of such a situation due to his making a rare TV commercial appearance in a controversial new American Express advertisement directed by Martin Scorcese. In the ad, DeNiro walks around New York talking about how important the city is to him, and his comment about Ground Zero is, "My heartbreak." The 30-second commercial has proven tremendously upsetting to many fans, who consider the commercial to be blasphemous, particularly for a New Yorker who says he loves the city so much. Internet chat sites are rife with angry fans fuming that the commercial shows bad taste and a lack of class, and "using a tragedy to sell a product stinks." DeNiro’s decision to shoot the commercial may have been an easy one, since American Express is a major contributor to his annual Tribeca Film Festivalbut the backlash of emotion against his appearance may cause American Express to think twice next time.

Sticky social or criminal entanglements can also result in a celebrity getting the boot. Kobe Bryant’s endorsement deals are currently on hold due to his legal troubles, and Michael Jackson’s highly publicized criminal charges have certainly ended any future he may have had in commercial endorsements, and they will probably make it impossible for him to gain sponsors for his tours and endorsements as well. Magic Johnson lost all of his endorsement deals in 1991 when he made the announcement that he is HIV-positive. Both Federal Express and Sears withdrew their sponsorship of Bill Maher’s Politically Incorrect after 9/11 when Maher publicly called American soldiers "cowards" for "lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away."

Companies have to make difficult decisions about using a celebrity to endorse their product if the endorsement gets more mileage for the famous face than it does for the product they’re selling. And companies must make speedy decisions when one of their endorsers comes under fire in the public eye, or their product’s image could be tarnished. Guilt by association in a consumer’s eyes translates to sinking profits in corporate bank accounts. While you’ll probably never hear of all companies dumping their celebrity endorsers, more and more advertisers are finding out that multi-million dollar contracts with celebrities are not a surefire way to move products ahead of their competitors.

It is very interesting to note that how much we are interested in the lives of the other people especially the lives of the celebrities. This is not something totally new to this century; researches show that these tendencies have their roots in prehistoric times. In prehistoric times people lived in smaller groups and every thing happened within that group and everyone knew everybody. There were no strangers among them; if you are a stranger then you were not worthy enough to live so they eliminated the strangers in their own way.

Such a lifestyle also meant that they should be aware of their competitors within their group because they had to fight amongst themselves when it came to sharing of resources that were often limited. When these groups started becoming bigger, they were unable to keep track of their primitive transactions and with whom they could liaise, who were the cheaters in the group, who is a fertile mate etc. So they had to pry into the private dealings of other members of the community and often the one who knew more about others was considered powerful; probably that is where all these started. They had no other choice to be interested in other people’s business. Over the centuries this quality has got ingrained into our genes and it is part of each one’s personality now.

Today the same trait can be seen in a different way because it is no more relevant to our lifestyle today. However, for certain people it is still a preoccupation, people who fight to cling on to success or to be more successful than the others. A general interest in celebrity gossips is basically part of human nature. Interestingly, in spite of such great refinement in our reasoning abilities we are still unable to shed this trait. Society is fascinated by celebrities because they are constantly on the big screen or television. Their talent and most of the time, their good looks is what attracts loyal fans. The fact that most celebrities are filthy rich is also an attraction. When celebrities make it big, they are even less accessible which makes people even more curious about every aspect of their lives from who they are dating to what they are wearing. Sometimes a fan’s love for a celebrity can get out of hand. Some celebrities have dealt with the obsessive fan who does not understand their boundaries. Brad Pitt once had a woman break into his home while countless stars have filed restraining orders against stalkers.

The main attraction to celebrity gossip is simply wanting to watch celebrity train wrecks. Britney Spears is a prime example of a young star whose life went from stardom to mayhem. The site is credited for outing former Nsync band member Lance Bass before he made his own announcement of being gay. People’s curiosities are satisfied from gossip sites such as these. Most people love when a celebrity has screwed up. Celebrity couples are also big news, along with celebrity divorces and kids.

One area of celebrity life I feel should be off limits are the children. Very often, these kids are hounded by the paparazzi as well. I think they should be allowed to live as normal as possible without cameras in their faces for everything that they do. Children should not have to deal with what their famous parents deal with. Some celebrity parents do not protect their children enough and often you will see these kids start off on drugs and alcohol at a young age. Some celebrities protect their children so well that you never see what they look like.

Celebrity gossip will continue to fascinate society as it is as entertaining as watching television or going to the movies. Just remember that these celebrities are people too and deal with the media backlash on a regular basis.

Heath Ledger – a man who lives on in the movies he made

The article is an obituary for Heath Ledger, the Australian movie actor who died in January 2008. It reflects on the fact that he relied on Xanax to remain functional in the face of intrusive media pressure. Sadly, he took a cocktail of medications and died.

Every life lost is a sad loss. If we know the person, the death can be a load that some cannot carry without the help of something like Xanax. Then comes Heath Ledger a man who lived his life in the public eye. It was like we all knew him so alive one minute; so uncompromisingly dead the next. A few days after his discovery on the 22nd January 2008, the Medical Examiner’s Report was published. Heath was relying on Xanax to keep him going. Let’s not judge him. Who is to say where the dividing line between genius and madness lies, nor how anyone stays on the right side of that line without help.

Here was a man at the centre of a perfect storm of expectations. The movie studios pitch their latest offerings to you on the backs of the stars who front them. Just think how much money rides on each star name. It used to be that a movie would only cost a few million. Now the production costs can pass $100m without pausing for breath. How does a young man in his twenties cope with that pressure? In 2000, he and Mel Gibson carried The Patriot at just $110m. Then he was headlining and on the run from the pack of celebrity magazines, gossip mongers and their paparazzi photographers who shred your privacy and compete with each other to catch you in your most unguarded moments.

The medical profession define social anxiety disorder as extreme anxiety about facing the judgement of others or behaving in a way that might cause you embarrassment or ridicule. How would you react if, everywhere you look or turn, you find a camera’s intrusive lens hoping to catch you in a moment that will sell a million magazines? Even the ordinary becomes the potentially extraordinary depending on how the camera captures it (and how some software package can manipulate it to make it more exploitable). When you know that anything you do or say can and will be misinterpreted for another’s profit, is it any surprise that you reach for Xanax? I think not.

In fact, the whole movie industry is probably built on Xanax. Feeling nervous or anxious before you set foot outside your front door knowing you’ll be stalked by photographers wherever you go? Take a Xanax. That’s not agoraphobia threatening to keep you hiding away, is it? Take another Xanax. The next magazine you open has pictures of you getting (un)dressed in your bedroom. They were taken with a telephoto lens from the building opposite. That’s not the first sign of a panic attack is it? Draw the curtains and take another Xanax just to keep on living.

But you need the relationship between public and private to stay blurred. To carry the films, your name has to be on everyone’s lips. You have to be the eye candy for the media voyeurism. Drop from those celebrity magazines and gossip columns, and you’re no longer the bankable star. Where can you buy Xanax without someone taking a picture of you? Buy Xanax online. But Heath lost control, mixed his medications, took too much, and paid the price. Let that be a warning to you all. Stay alive by keeping control of your intake of Xanax and any other medications.

The one consolation in all this is that, even though Xanax was not able to keep poor Heath going, we still have the next Batman film to look forward to. By all accounts, Heath’s performance as the Joker in the Dark Knight is well worth the price of entry. Although there’s perhaps something inherently ironic about Xanaxman playing the Joker. Here’s a character so completely over-the-top, so excessive in his nature with all that malicious glee bubbling over into destructive energy. Did Heath have to take Xanax to act the part of someone who so obviously doesn’t take Xanax?

Celebrity Gossip: What’s The Attraction?

Have you ever found yourself enthralled by what goes on in the personal lives of celebrities? Well, you aren’t alone. A huge percentage of people all over the world look forward to opening up their magazine of choice and reading about what the famous are up to. In what new ways has Tom Cruise embarrassed himself? Has Britney Spears given birth yet? Are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie sleeping in separate beds? For some reason, many humans find these things to be interesting.

But you have to ask yourself, why is it that people are entertained hearing about celebrity gossip? If Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are having marital troubles, what makes it more interesting than your neighbors regular fights? Is it because the celebrities have more money, and therefore anything that happens to them is more important? After all, if I want to hear about marital troubles, I don’t have to look very far.

Celebrity gossip is a huge business. The photographers can earn literally thousands of dollars just for taking a picture of a celebrity. The magazines scrape together every little bit of info the can to come up with the newest rumors. The magazines are released to grocery store checkouts across the nation, and are quickly snapped up by shoppers eager to hear the latest.

The Celebrity is really an interesting phenomenon. Society has idolized people who are hardly more good-looking or charismatic than the average person. And individuals have followed this trend, and begun to be interested by the celebrity gossip that is everywhere. But when put into perspective, few people can come up with the true reason they are interested by it. So, ask yourself why you really enjoy reading the gossip magazines. If you can’t come up with any valid reason, perhaps it’s time to rethink your priorities.

Celebrity Gossip – Good Or Bad?

People know more about Paris Hilton, than they do President Bush. Celebrities are always in the news for a variety of different reasons. They might be getting drunk, and making a fool out of themselves (Mel Gibson), or getting a divorce (Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro), or almost dropping their baby in the street (Britney Spears). Whatever they are doing, we are all tuned to watch, and listen to the celebrity gossip.

Most of the time the only celebrity gossip that appears on television concerns something bad that has happened, or some mistake a celebrity has made. The public likes to watch figures in the spotlight fall on their face, because it brings them back down to earth with the rest of us. Also it seems that we like to give air time to celebrities so they can complain about the way the government is being run. We can setup a large forum to let celebrities speak about how the war in Iraq is wrong, but we can not take five minutes to tell the soldiers that are fighting there how much we appreciate them for what they are doing. I would like to help change the view about celebrities and write about some celebrity gossip of a different flavor.

Towards the beginning of the war in Iraq, Densel Washington made a trip to a hospital in Fort Sam Houston, Texas to see some of the injured soldiers. While he was there he saw that the hospital was crowded and the doctors there needed more supplies. Densel told the soldiers at the hospital that help would be on the way. About six months later, he gave a sizable donation to the Fisher House Foundation Inc., which helps families of hospitalized military personnel. I never heard any gossip about this on the celebrity news channels. The only time I heard about this great act of generosity was in an email from someone else that was trying to spread the good word. I think we would all feel a little bit better about celebrities if the celebrity gossip shows would try to report on more uplifting stories like this one.

Tomkat And The Becks Celebrate Thanksgiving In Style

The friendship between TomKat and the Becks, two A-List Hollywood couples, has made headlines ever since David and Victoria Beckham moved to America. David Beckham, one of the best football players in the world, and Victoria (a former Spice Girl) went to support Katie Holmes in her play, ‘All My Sons’. They accompanied Katie’s husband Tom Cruise as they all headed to the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater to watch Katie’s performance.

After the play, the two couples were spotted together in New York City once again. They all met up in the TomKat’s place before heading out with their children in tow. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have a daughter named Suri (Tom also has two adoptive children, Connor and Isabella, with his ex-wife Nicole Kidman) whereas David and Victoria Beckham have three sons named Cruz, Romeo and Brooklyn. TomKat, the Becks, and all their children were seen celebrating Thanksgiving dinner together in Il Cantinori Restaurant in Manhattan.

It has also been rumored recently that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have been on the look-out for movies where they can both act together. A source revealed that, ‘They’re looking at remaking Last Tango In Paris, but anything sexy with a good story appeals. Tom’s looking for something that’s cutting edge and sexy, but also accessible.’ He added that ‘He’s thinking along the lines of Basic Instinct – a movie that has a mainstream plot, but also some intense sex stuff. He hasn’t found the script yet, but both he and Katie are reading a few that could fit the bill.’

The relationship between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes seems to be going strong, and according to Tom his past erratic behavior may have contributed to it. He said, ‘There are things that I could have done better. I could have handled things better. I was surprised by the criticism but it brought everyone close together. Katie’s entire family and my family. Going through that stuff is not pleasant, and I think it hit an extreme, but Kate’s a very sure and confident and strong woman. She gets it, you know.’
